The U.S. has decided to resume giving food aid to North Korea. Washington will channel 400,000 tons through the World Food Program and 100,000 tons through U.S. non-governmental organizations on condition that Pyongyang will permit “port to mouth” inspections to ensure proper dispensation of food aid. An official in Washington expects President George W. Bush to give the go-ahead to the agreement “within days,” and shipments to begin in early June. WFP spokeswoman Jennifer Parmelee is pleased with Washington’s intention but insisted that the agency has “no word that any plans have been finalized.” U.S. authorities will meet with representatives from the WFP, various NGOs and the North Korean government to discuss the type of food that the North American nation would provide.
