Watch: The secrets to successful consulting

From CV writing and networking to negotiating rates and landing contracts, learn from a former senior recruitment manager with the World Bank about proven strategies for an effective consulting career.

    By Justin Sablich // 13 April 2022
Consulting has its perks: a flexible working schedule, the ability to focus on causes or regions you are passionate about, and the opportunity to work with a variety of clients and donors. But it can be challenging as well, particularly when you are just starting out. Having a clear idea of the types of organizations you want to work with and then knowing how to connect with them is one piece of the consulting puzzle. “It's very difficult to be successful, or to even explore opportunities, without knowing [and] understanding the target … the organization, the company … that we have in mind, that we would like to approach. This is the main pre-requirement before we even start thinking of consulting opportunities,” said Roberto Amorosino, a former senior human resources specialist at the World Bank Group. Following up on a recent discussion we held for global development professionals considering a career in consulting, Devex hosted a digital event featuring insights from Amorosino, an independent career coach for development professionals who spent over 25 years as a recruiter for the World Bank. From CV writing and networking to negotiating rates and landing contracts, we uncovered proven strategies for an effective consulting career. Highlights from this event include: • How to share your skills and experience impressively. • The do’s and don’ts of consulting CVs. • How to identify the right networking opportunities. • Where to find leads for top consulting jobs. • Tips for negotiating fair rates. Speaker: Roberto Amorosino, career coach Moderator: Justin Sablich, careers editor, Devex For a perfect companion to this conversation, make sure you read our Consulting 101 guide, which we used to help steer the discussion.
