Watch: What now for a new EU development bank?

As the prospect of a new European Climate and Sustainable Development Bank fades, what happens next? Devex speaks to Mikaela Gavas from the Center for Global Development.

    By Vince Chadwick // 17 February 2021
Earlier this month, we reported on the fading prospects for a new European Climate and Sustainable Development Bank — an idea that was first proposed back in October 2019 to unify Europe’s development finance offer outside its borders. So what happens now? In this Devex Pro conversation, Brussels Correspondent Vince Chadwick and Mikaela Gavas, co-director of the Center for Global Development’s Europe Programme, unpack the latest study — which is yet to be publicly released — on the relative merits of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank when it comes to development finance outside Europe. The 25-minute talk looks at what we’ve learned from years of expert reflections on the sometimes overlapping roles of the two banks, what “Status Quo+” — the solution backed by the latest report — would mean for European development finance, and the personalities who will help decide what happens next.
