Webinar: How the EU is spending on development
Devex data and analytics experts offer an overview of key policy and structural discussions across the EU’s governing bodies — and their potential impact on funding for development programming.
By Devex Editor // 28 November 2019As the European Union prepares for its next budget cycle, known as the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework, development actors are paying close attention to the many proposals and funding targets put forth by the European Commission, European Parliament, and individual member states. While prioritizing increased funding for certain thematic areas — climate change, gender equality, and migration — as well as for specific regions like sub-Saharan Africa, the budget negotiations have also been informed by a number of structural changes. A new humanitarian aid chief and commissioner for international partnerships, a push for a single instrument for external action to replace multiple funding channels, and greater parliamentary oversight of budget and programming were among the agenda items in early budget discussions. Building off of our interactive EU budget analysis, Devex convened a webinar exploring the EU’s humanitarian and development funding priorities over the course of its current budget cycle, which is set to conclude next year.
