Who's who in #globaldev: September 2020 appointments
AIIB and the new U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office have appointed their first chief economists.
By Jenny Lei Ravelo // 05 October 2020Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Erik Berglof is the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s first chief economist. He started Sept. 1. Prior to joining the bank, Berglof was director of the Institute of Global Affairs at the London School of Economics. He previously served as chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In 2019, he was part of the high-level “Wise Persons Group” that scrutinized European development finance. Before that, he was deputy secretary of the G20 Eminent Persons Group on Global Financial Governance. United Kingdom The new U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has also appointed Rachel Glennerster as its first chief economist. Glennerster was chief economist of the now-defunct U.K. Department for International Development. She previously served as executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab. Global Environment Facility Costa Rica's Carlos Manuel Rodríguez is the new head of the Global Environment Facility, succeeding Naoko Ishii of Japan. Read Devex’s Pro interview with Rodriguez. European Investment Bank Christian Kettel Thomsen is the new vice president of the European Investment Bank. Previously, he was permanent secretary of state at the Danish prime minister’s office, and also served as secretary to the queen in council. He also served in several positions at the Danish Ministry of Finance. US International Development Finance Corporation The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation has appointed its first inspector general. Anthony Zakel will be reviewing DFC activities “while working to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse,” according to a news release. Previously, Zakel was deputy assistant inspector general for aviation audits at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance José Manuel Barroso is the new chair of the board of the Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Barroso was a former prime minister of Portugal and president of the European Commission. Americares Global nonprofit Americares has announced M. Rashad Massoud as its new senior vice president and chief program officer. As part of his role, Massoud is to oversee the organization’s health programs globally and lead the organization’s COVID-19 response. Before joining Americares, Massoud served as chief medical and quality officer as well as senior vice president of the Quality and Performance Institute at University Research Co. He was also previously director of USAID’s Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems Project, according to a news release. United Nations Key United Nations appointments in September include: • Gina Casar of Mexico as senior adviser at the World Food Program at the assistant secretary-general level. • Babatunde Ahonsi of Nigeria as U.N. resident coordinator in Sierra Leone. • Zahira Virani of Canada as U.N. resident coordinator in Angola. • Arnaud Peral of France as U.N. resident coordinator in Tunisia. • Fiona McCluney of the U.K. as U.N. resident coordinator in Albania. • Matthias Z. Naab of the U.S. and Ghana as U.N. resident coordinator in Cameroon. • Lena Savelli of Sweden as U.N. resident coordinator in Ecuador. • Garry Conille of Haiti as U.N. resident coordinator in Jamaica. Resilient Cities Network The Resilient Cities Network has four new additions to its board of directors. They include: • Daniel Stander, private sector representative to the U.N. • Naina Batra, chairwoman and CEO of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network. • Sylvester Turner, mayor of Houston, Texas. • Sameh Wahba, global director of urban, disaster risk management, resilience, and land global practice at the World Bank. CARE Canada CARE Canada has also welcomed four new members to its board of directors: • Cindy Karugia, financial adviser at the Royal Bank of Canada. • Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO of Fraser Health. • Lisa Raitt, vice chair of global investment banking at CIBC Capital Markets. • David Turpin who previously served as president of the University of Alberta. Comic Relief Comic Relief has appointed Aleema Shivji as its new executive director of impact and investment. Shivji is the executive director of Humanity & Inclusion UK. The British charity also appointed BBC Three Controller Fiona Campbell to its board of trustees. The Skoll Foundation Cheryl Dorsey, president of Echoing Green, is the newest board member of The Skoll Foundation.
