Zambia Says MCC Compact Eligibility Stays Despite Health Ministry Scam

    By Eliza Villarino // 09 April 2010

Zambia’s finance minister said the country has not lost its eligibility for a compact with the Millennium Challenge Corp. despite last year’s financial scam involving the Zambian Health Ministry.

The scandal already cost Zambia support from some donors.

“The issue at the Ministry of Health has been taken into account but that is only one among many issues,” said Zambian Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, as quoted by The Post Online. “But in any case, it’s about ‘how does the government handle a scandal that emerges like the one that did occur.’ Was it handled in a manner that is that acceptable in the sense that if you go to any country and such a thing occurred the government would have expected to respond in a certain way? Did our government respond like that? And the answer of course is yes.

The country is seeking about USD700 million under the proposed grant agreement with MCC.
