Dillon is an international, Canadian-owned professional consulting organization committed to guiding our clients towards the successful application of science, technology and management.
Since its inception, the company has grown steadily in services provided, range of expertise, geographic scope and size. We operate across Canada and in Asia, the Caribbean Region, the United States and Central and South America. Our employees have skills in over 30 distinct disciplines, and include professional engineers, architects, planners, economists, and physical and socia scientists. We are experienced in working independently, within integrated project teams, and through a variety of project delivery methods including design-build, public-private partnerships, and conventional consultant-owner relationships.
SERVICES
We are a technically diverse company. We are a geographically dispersed company. And we are a client-focused company. Managing 600 people in such a context is challenging and rewarding. How do biologists develop their careers, receive wise counsel and contribute to the firm’s capabilities and profile in their chosen profession? How do project managers know where to get a specific skill? How does the firm’s management know what the firm knows about a subject.
If we were all in one building, we would organize skills by department, but use proximity and familiarity to share knowledge. But we are not (to the considerable benefit of our clients!) … so we have organized ourselves into “practices”.
Building & Facilities Design
The Building and Facilities Practice provides services to clients in both the public and private sectors on projects that encompass commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential facilities.
Our staff is trained in sustainable design practices, specifically in the use of recyclable and environmentally friendly materials for new construction, and the design of building envelopes and mechanical/electrical systems that either reduces the use of fossil fuels, or incorporates alternate energy sources. We understand the importance of the indoor working environment of a building or facility as well as its impact on the local environment.
Environmental Management & Atmospheric Services
Whether an industrial operation or municipal government, environment, health and safety can have a significant impact on the “bottom line”. Dillon’s environment, health and safety practice services both private sector and public sector clients across Canada by helping to manage these risks.
Geoscience
The focus of the Geoscience Practice is the assessment of subsurface conditions, from both a physical and environmental perspective, in order to manage environmental impacts and associated risks, as well as to manage and protect groundwater resources.
Our team of geoscientists, environmental scientists and engineers, human health and ecological risk assessors, and environmental technologists apply integrated technical and project management skills in association with our regulatory knowledge to develop client focused solutions using the most appropriate application of various technologies.
Landscape Architecture & Environmental Design
Dillon provides landscape architecture and urban design services of the highest quality to public and private sector clients throughout Canada and abroad. These capabilities have been significantly enhanced through our recent merger with ENVision - The Hough Group. Principles of ecological and urban sustainability, as well as creative design, are hallmarks of our combined approach.
Municipal Engineering
Municipal engineering involves the development and management of the urban and regional infrastructure supporting day-to-day living. Streets, lighting, water supply, sewage collection, wastewater treatment, stormwater management, refuse disposal and a host of other technical aspects of the modern city fall within the general field of municipal engineering.
Our municipal engineering practice has deep roots in the firm, extending back to our earliest days 60 years ago. Today, it builds on our traditional infrastructure design and construction practices into asset management, infrastructure rehabilitation, operations, service delivery and finance.
Natural Environment Management
Proper management of the physical, chemical and biological components of the natural environment and their complex interactions requires diverse technical expertise and the ability to achieve balanced, integrated solutions to environmental management issues.
Clients rely on Dillon’s natural environment management practice, and the company’s broader technical resources, to provide those solutions. Our team of experienced scientists, technicians and technologists operate from offices across the country, bringing broad experience from all of Canada’s major biogeoclimatic regions and an approach that capitalizes on our local knowledge and understanding of applicable environmental legislation and policy.
Planning & Development Strategies
Over the past 40 years, Dillon’s Planning and Development Strategies Practice has become one of Canada’s largest professional planning practices. We have developed and implemented new approaches to strategic planning, integrated land use and infrastructure planning, ecosystembased planning, brownfield redevelopment and sustainable community design.
Transportation Engineering
Our transportation engineering practice is a cornerstone of Dillon’s services to clients. From our cross-Canada platform of skilled engineers and scientists, we are able to undertake assignments as routine as a resurfacing of a city street and as complex as the design of billion-dollar toll roads.
Transportation Systems Planning
Transportation systems planning has long been a cornerstone of Dillon’s services. Early work in this field included the route selection and planning for many of the roads that you drive on every day. We now include transportation systems planning and management, traffic operations and planning, and transit planning and operations, in our repertoire of skills.
Waste Management & Remediation Solutions
Dillon's waste management and remediation solutions practice acknowledges the requirement for innovative solutions during the overall waste/resource management life cycle. Consistent with the multi-disciplinary nature of the field, solutions require technical professional expertise in civil, chemical and environmental engineering and hydrogeology. These skills are contained within Dillon’s waste management and remediation solutions practice.
Water Resources
Water resources management has long been one of Dillon's core practice areas, serving public and private sector clients from coast, to coast to coast and abroad.
Our staff has demonstrated innovation in the field of natural stream channel design and restoration, and the integration of new technologies such as GIS into water resources modelling and drainage planning.
Water, Wastewater Systems Design
The provision of clean water supply and the treatment and disposal of domestic and industrial waste are often closely inter-related. Our water and wastewater systems practice focuses on the technologies and approaches needed to provide clean water and manage effluents.
SECTORS SERVED
Dillon focuses on its services to clients within four economic areas and the international community.
Government: we have been serving clients in federal, provincial and municipal governments, along with their departments and their agencies, for more than 60 years. The work we do is seen all around us – infrastructure, community planning and development, environmental management and buildings/facilities. Our government clients expect, and get, two key ingredients of their success from Dillon: a deep understanding of the technologies associated with these services and an even deeper understanding of the communities and regions in which they are required.
Industry: private-sector corporations, the providers of goods and services of everyday life, are a major client group of Dillon. Manufacturing, transportation, chemicals, financial services, environmental services and construction companies have benefited from our expertise for decades. While our initial focus was on the design and implementation of industrial facilities, we now complement those with a broad range of environmental, health and safety services. And since the advent of public-private partnerships, we have worked closely with major Canadian contractors in the delivery of infrastructure solutions under this new model of project delivery.
Resources: the Canadian economy is built on a foundation of resources. Oil and gas, mining, pulp and paper and the power sector are major contributors. We help clients in this sector with a range of services – facility planning and development, environmental compliance and approvals, resource management, service optimization, worker health and safety, etc.
Real Estate: while governments are primarily responsible for the planning and development of community infrastructure, it is the real estate industry that provides the built-space that houses us and provides the retail, commercial and industrial facilities our economy requires. We understand what drives the real estate industry. We understand the services developers require. And we understand that they work differently from government.
International: while international clients include governments, industry, real estate companies and the resources sector, we consider them a separate group from our domestic clients. And we manage our relationships with international clients through Dillon people who are experienced and skilled in working in the international marketplace.
