They are a network of 14 faith-based development agencies from across Europe whose purpose is to influence EU policy makers and decision-making processes in the pursuit of justice, peace and the eradication of global poverty. They bring many years of experience to the work. For 25 years they were known as APRODEV and since January 2015 as ACT Alliance EU. Their policy and advocacy is always rooted in the reality of our global partners and stakeholders, demonstrating the consequences of decisions made in Brussels on the lives of people in different contexts and in different parts of the world. They believe that Southern voices need to be heard and listened to in the European Union. Their three areas of focus are climate change, food security and the European Union’s development policy and practice. These are crucial and connected issues. They also engage in the relations between the EU and the Middle East, and the EU and Central America, and how they affect development and human rights. They are part of ACT Alliance, a global coalition of 140 relief and development agencies, joining their efforts to influence global policy making by combining their EU advocacy and policy expertise with ACT Alliance’s advocacy work in the global South and with the United Nations. They are a faith based network. As such they pursue rights-based development from a faith-based perspective, working to uphold the dignity of all human beings. They are united in a commitment to holistic, inclusive and sustainable development for all. This means addressing the social, cultural, spiritual, environmental, political and economic dimensions that are needed for all people to live with dignity, justice and peace. Development Policy and Practice Re-balancing the European Union security and economic interests with its development policy objectives and its values of democracy, solidarity and respect for human rights is a major challenge for the coming years. The issue is not only about policy coherence for sustainable development but also about using EU financial resources and cooperation instruments for the right purpose and with the right impact in a political context dominated by an economic crisis agenda, global competition for natural resources and land, growing inequalities and shrinking space for civil society. Building on evidence from its members, ACT Alliance EU aims at influencing EU policy making, legislation and practice which impact on human rights, equality and inclusiveness, particularly for women and girls and the implementation of the sustainable development goals so that all people can realise their full potential and enjoy their rights protected by international law, conventions and norms. Food Security ACT Alliance EU works on policies against hunger advocating for the realisation of the right to food, for a transition towards a just and equitable food systems, and improved and resilient livelihoods of poor farming communities. ACT Alliance EU monitors relevant developments in EU trade and EU agricultural policies that impact on agricultural markets and food security in the South. We work to increase policy space for developing countries to support sustainable agricultural futures and prevent or reverse negative development impacts. Agricultural and large-scale land investments in developing countries are on the increase. They not only often fail to deliver on expected benefits to local development but more often, investments are associated with loss of livelihood, land grabs and human rights violations. ACT Alliance EU seeks to reverse these trends. Natural resources are rapidly degrading. The loss of seed and agrobiodiversity is alarming. We support smallholders as key drivers to change and advocate for social and ecological agricultural practices to sustain and care for the environmental resources on which poor farming communities rely. Climate Change Since the 19th century the earth’s climate system has been changing due to human industrial activities based on fossil fuels and energy-intensive lifestyles. Consequently slow onset changes and extreme weather events becoming more intense and frequent already impact all of us around the world, but endangering more the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable who have contributed the least to global warming. ACT Alliance EU fights this injustice and undertakes targeted lobby and advocacy work to eliminate the causes of climate change, to provide adequate support for building resilient societies and to promote sustainable solutions for a better development eradicating poverty in the long term.
