Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS Cairo)
AICS – the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development – is one of key innovations established by the Italian law on international cooperation (Law No. 125/2014). The Agency began operating in January 2016, with the aim of aligning Italy with its principal European and global partners in the endeavor of development. Its basic model reflects that used in the main European countries, and it must comply with the demand for more professional and innovative forms of cooperation, involving the methodological flexibility necessary in a continuously evolving scenario.
The Agency headquarters are in Rome. AICS runs another base in Florence and 20 field offices worldwide for assessing local needs, implementing development initiatives, monitoring results and building partnerships on the ground. According to the law, the Agency’s mission is to “perform technical and operational activities associated with the examination, development, financing, management and control of the cooperation initiatives”.
Development cooperation is a fundamental component of the Italian presence in Egypt. Also thanks to the concrete aids granted to the country in the particular economic situation that characterized the post revolution and the transitional phase, Italy has further confirmed its role as Egypt’s strategic partner, while developing a cooperative experience judged by the Egyptians Model to be replicated. The action promoted here has always been characterized not only by meeting the real needs of the Egyptian population, the demands of the civil society and the demands of the Government, but also with extreme sensitivity to the specificities of the historical moment as well as the territory and culture Egyptians.
The Italian Cooperation in Egypt has as a main objective eradicate hunger and poverty by working on several dimensions : (i) the social dimension has as objective the protection and empowerment of the most vulnerable groups of the population, ,especially women, children, elderly and people with disabilities-;(ii) Human Capital development through technical and vocational education and training focuses to promotion job’s opportunities - especially for young people; (iii) economic development supports the development and access to credit in particular of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises ; (iv) Agriculture and Rural Development is an important and historical sector for the Italian cooperation in Egypt and it aims at improving water resource management and efficiency in agriculture, promote good agricultural practices and enhance socio-economic condition of local farmers; (v) cultural heritage is another dimension fundamental for the protection and enhancement of the beautiful natural, cultural, historical and archaeological Egyptian heritage, also through the promotion of forms of responsible tourism; (vi) Environment is a crucial sector for Italy and projects under this umbrella aim at protect the many natural protected areas of Egypt, to enhance the quality of air, water and to improve the waste management of the country.See more
