Akonni Biosystems, based in Frederick, Maryland, is a molecular diagnostics (MDx) company that develops, manufactures, and markets integrated molecular diagnostic systems. They are in close proximity to Ft. Detrick, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). They maintain a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of nearly 20,000 square feet.

The company’s founders defined the company through its name, ‘Akonni’ (of Native American origin). Akonni translates to “an attraction to the mysteries of nature, with a deep desire to understand those mysteries.”

The mission is to develop, manufacture, and sell molecular diagnostic (MDx) tools for rapid, affordable and accurate diagnoses that will measurably improve the health status of millions of people worldwide.

The vision is to build a flexible diagnostic platform and common manufacturing infrastructure (low cost and scalable) for the microarray products, which enables multiplexed pattern recognition of genetic, protein, metabolite or small molecule markers associated with the host or pathogen.
