Albtelecom SH. a. was founded on 5 February 1992 as Albania's state telecommunications company, having previously existed as a government office tracing its history back to 1912. It is the largest fixed line telephone company in the country, currently covering around 10 per cent of Albania's 3.2 million population.
It was privatized on 1 October 2007 (following a privatization process starting in 2000), with 76% of its shares sold by the Albanian government to a consortium of two Turkish companies, Çalık Holding and Türk Telekom, with Calik taking 80% of the consortium's stake.
ALBtelecom is a new reality now with capacities to change itself and be an absolute part of telecommunication development technology. Licensed by ERT since 1992 in offering fixed telephone services, ALBtelecom has now the absolute superior fixed telephone and internet services. The year 2008 marks the start of a new era within the company itself as well as in the fixed network telecommunication services.
After a year of transition because of privatization and real situation identification by the buyer company, the investments are focused on it’s national infrastructure and network improvement. ALBtelecom as the absolute market leader with the quality service increase, infrastructure investments and tariff sensitive decrease makes stronger the tie with Albanian citizens.
Infrastructure preparation
ALBtelecom became as a single company on February 5, 1992, whereas on February 16, 1992, the company was named “ALBtelecom” with the status of society anonym. ALBtelecom is the largest fixed operating telephone company in the country offering it’s services in all urban areas of the country, meanwhile it expands telecommunication services almost in the whole country through interconnection partnership with other rural operators.
Actually, ALBtelecom has it’s affiliates in main centres of the country enabling through them all it’s services. The main activity of the company is concentrated on the telecommunication’s service sale, telephone traffic, giving for rent of transmission lines and capacities, and the offering of interconnection to all public operators licensed by ERT. The largest fixed telephone operator company in the country offers a quality digital transmission communication, and also it is increasing investments in new technology’s absorption and application such as ADSL etc.
ALBtelecom operates in Albanian market with some major services such as fixed telephone, ISDN service, Dedicated Internet acc, ADSL, Dial-up, Intranet, Prepaid Cards, etc. On the other side, the company is investing to expand the services in parallel with a sensitive quality of service improvement. During the last 15 years, the company has made several investments for the quality and service’s number increase offered to the client. In order to increase service’s quality and number, and fulfil the increased public demands, ALBtelecom established in year 1993 the Albania-Macedonia microwave connection, and a year later ALBtelecom established Albanian- Swiss satellite connection.
ALBtelecom as a telecommunication market leader carried out in year 1996 the public telephone prepaid cards service. A year later, the Optical Fiber cable was put into use for the international traffic transmission. The year 2000 stresses out other achievements including here the transmission capacity increase through radio rely connection, establishment of Supervisory Center and Network Maintenance, installation and putting into use of new digital stations.
