Alion is a world leader in ship design. The company has a long history of providing complete engineering and program management support to ship programs for a variety of governments including Canada, the US, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, India, South Korea, Israel and commercial customers. They are proudly the largest naval architecture and marine engineering firm in the US dedicated to providing engineering and management services to the maritime markets including all phases of vessel design, engineering and acquisition.
Alion traces its roots to the Chicago-based Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), which established the IIT Research Institute (IITRI) in 1936, with the goal of testing and developing new, beneficial technologies. Building on 80 years of innovation, Alion turns obstacles into opportunities to help customers achieve their missions.
On December 20, 2002, approximately 1,600 employees of IITRI purchased a majority stake of the organization's assets, founding Alion Science and Technology Corporation and retaining the rich heritage of innovation and exploration that had characterized the company since its inception.
An important piece of our heritage is John J. McMullen Associates (JJMA), a world leader in naval architecture and marine engineering. Since 1957, JJMA led or supported the design of all ship types, including commercial and naval vessels, from concept through detailed design and construction, including playing a significant role in detailed design of the Canadian Patrol Frigate for St John Shipbuilding Limited. Alion has been involved in the design, construction, and in-service support of all vessel classes currently operated by the US Navy. Alion acquired JJMA in 2005 to enter into the maritime markets. By mid-2006, Alion also acquired large portions of Anteon Corporation and its naval contracts, expanding Alion’s reach across the US Navy. Alion, during the process of its IPO on the NSE, was acquired by Veritas Capital in 2015.
Alion Canada, headquartered in Ottawa, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alion Science and Technology Corporation. Alion Canada was established in early 2009 for the purpose of developing a domestic ship design capability, primarily to support the Canadian Government’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS). The goal was to build a presence in Canada and to respond to a serious gap in the naval design sector and develop Canadian capability by leveraging Alion’s capabilities and experience.
