About

ArcelorMittal is a leading steel and mining company. Guided by a philosophy to produce safe, sustainable steel, it is the leading supplier of quality steel products in all major markets including automotive, construction, household appliances and packaging. ArcelorMittal operates in 60 countries and employs about 245,000 people worldwide.

We are the leader in all major global steel markets, including automotive, construction, household appliances and packaging, with leading research and development and technology, as well as sizeable captive supplies of raw materials and outstanding distribution networks. With an industrial presence in more than 22 countries spanning four continents, the company covers all of the key steel markets, from emerging to mature.

Steel

We have steelmaking operations in more than 20 countries on four continents, in both developing and developed steel markets. In 2012, we had revenues of US$84.2 billion and crude steel production of 88.2 million tonnes, which represents around 6% of world steel output.
Around 35% of our steel is produced in the Americas, 47% in Europe and 18% in other regions, including Kazakhstan, South Africa and Ukraine. ArcelorMittal is number one for market position and market share in North and South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and CIS, and Africa.
We are focusing our efforts for future growth on the emerging economies, particularly Brazil and India, with joint ventures under way in the Middle East and China.

Mining

Our mining business is one of the pillars of ArcelorMittal’s growth strategy. In 2012 we produced 55.9 million tonnes of iron ore and 8.2 million tonnes of coal. Our low-cost iron ore and coal resources provide security of supply and shelter from raw material price changes. Our mining business also offers substantial scope for profitable expansion, and we have a production target of 84 million tonnes of iron ore by 2015.
We currently have mining operations in 10 countries: Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine and the US. Projects are being developed in: Mauritania, Senegal and South Africa.

Research and development

We have more than 1,400 full-time researchers and 11 laboratories worldwide. In 2011 we invested more than US$300m in research and development. We use our researchers’ expertise in steel to develop cleaner processes and greener products, including ultra-high-strength steels (UHSS) and Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking (ULCOS), to make steel production more sustainable and help reduce not just our own environmental impact but that of our customers as well.

The ArcelorMittal Foundation

The ArcelorMittal Foundation is a non-profit organisation that supports the social and economic development of communities in regions where we have business operations.

Formed in 2007, the ArcelorMittal Foundation has grown to reach communities in 30 countries. In 2012 we supported 725 social local projects across the world. We also partner with global non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to undertake projects in our communities. For example, we are working with Habitat for Humanity to build low-cost houses in regions that lack adequate housing.

The ArcelorMittal Foundation works for the sustainable development of local communities. We believe that education, health and community development are essential to an enhanced quality of life for the communities in which we work.

Our strategy is to cultivate local resources and skills for sustainable social change. For example, we support a microcredit facility, Bem Bank in Brazil, which serves 30,000 people in the São Benedito neighbourhood in Vitória.

We partner with governmental agencies, NGOs, community representatives and private institutions, such as schools, to understand local social, cultural and environmental issues. Projects are led by our network of correspondents, based in our major business units. We have a clear methodology to guide every project, which we adapt to regional circumstances.

The ArcelorMittal Foundation also encourages volunteering among employees with the Global Volunteer Work Programme.
