Corporate Social Responsibility
At Armajaro Trading we recognise the importance of being a responsible business - to us that means being a responsible employer, a responsible supply chain manager and a responsible member of the international community.
In order to fulfil our responsibilities to the farmers who supply us, the chocolate makers and coffee roasters who buy from us, our employees who keep our business running, the wider community in which we operate and the environment in which we all live and work, our approach to corporate responsibility incorporates Communities, the Environment, our Marketplace and our Workplaces.
Community
We are passionate about supporting smallholder farmers living in difficult conditions and we have worked hard to become the responsible supply chain manager we are today. We established our own not-for-profit organisation called Source Trust, which aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers in the developing world . Our customers pay premiums for traceable commodities and these are invested by Source Trust in the communities which actually grew the commodities we sold. Source Trust focuses on yield improvement as a means of giving farmers a way out of poverty as well as community development and support including water, health and education.
Environment
We are measuring our carbon footprint in order to develop a sustainable plan for emissions reduction. Our process aims to identify our carbon emissions and water usage across all countries in which we operate.
Armajaro Trading Ltd has a dedicated team specialising in Development and Sustainability (D&S) across our cocoa and coffee commodity operations.
In 2005 we became the first supplier of Rainforest Alliance cocoa from Africa through the PPDC partnership (http://www.certified-cocoa.com/). The PPDC project was a public-private alliance that helped improve the well-being of smallholder cocoa farmers in Côte d'Ivoire.
Coupled with our extensive presence in the key coffee and cocoa producing origins, we continue to help empower farmers by investing in initiatives that assist farmers to improve their yield and working conditions. These include projects to:
To support the above projects, we work in partnership with our not-for-profit organisation Source Trust. Source Trust supports and promotes sustainable farming practises throughout the developing world. It focuses on solutions which enhance the farmer's ability to trade, by reinvesting voluntary premiums paid on traceable cocoa and coffee to help improve crop yield and create sustainable livelihoods within farming communities.
To date, Source Trust has invested in hand dug wells, boreholes and malaria nets in cocoa producing districts across Ghana, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast. In 2009, Source Trust completed the construction of classroom blocks in the Cross River cocoa district in Nigeria.
We consider traceability to be the key to the long term success of any sustainability initiative. We have invested in software systems and training to enhance traceability of our supply chains. Such investments build on traceable foundations laid in 2007, when we successfully implemented a project to source traceable cocoa in Ghana.
