WHO THEY ARE

The Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN) has ninety-three members from sixteen countries across Asia and the Pacific, consisting of former political, diplomatic and military leaders, senior government officials, and scholars and opinion leaders.

WHAT THEY DO

As an advocacy group, the APLN aims to inform and energise public opinion, especially high-level policymakers, to take seriously the very real threats posed by nuclear weapons, and to do everything possible to achieve a world in which they are contained, diminished and eventually eliminated.

MISSION

The Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN) has ninety-three members from sixteen countries across Asia and the Pacific, consisting of former political, diplomatic and military leaders, senior government officials, and scholars and opinion leaders. As an advocacy group, the APLN aims to inform and energize public opinion, especially high-level policymakers, to take seriously the very real threats posed by nuclear weapons, and to do everything possible to achieve a world in which they are contained, diminished and eventually eliminated.

The concept of such advocacy networks was strongly supported by the Australia and Japan-sponsored International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (co-chaired by former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans and former Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi) in its final 2010 communique.
 
The APLN works in concert with comparable leadership networks in Europe, Latin America and the United States, all of which are strongly supported by the Washington-based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI).

APLN members contribute to the nuclear debate by making public statements from time to time, engaging in direct advocacy with regional governments as both public and private opportunities arise, commissioning research and hosting regional seminars and conferences as resources permit. This website is the flagship of the Network, featuring the work of the members, promoting well-informed discussion and monitoring Asia-Pacific nuclear threats and measures to contain and eliminate them.
