The Bangalore Hospice Trust (BHT) – Karunashraya, was incepted as a secular registered charitable trust by the Indian Cancer Society (Karnataka Chapter) and Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar to provide free professional palliative care for advanced stage cancer patients who are beyond cure.
The first hospice of its genre in India to offer patients flexibility in alternating between our in-patient care and home care, Karunashraya helps patients live without pain, and in dignity and peace till their journey’s end.
Services
• In-patient care (15th year of service) & home care (19th year of service) – they’ve touched more than 15,000 patients and their families till date.
• Residential Health Assistants Training Programme for adult women from lower socio-economic groups who are later employed as health assistants in the hospice or deployed to homes. Till date, 20 batches covering nearly 300 students have benefited from this programme.
• Resource center for Masters and Diploma programmes in palliative care with Cardiff University, UK.
• MOUs with seven satellite hospices in Chennai, Kalyanpur, Mangalore, Nagpur, Puttur, Shimoga and Vellore for ongoing consultancy and Continuing Medical Education.
• Other educational initiatives including workshops, conferences and awareness programs on palliative care, psychological issues in patient care for nurses, counselors & volunteers; programs in partnership with the Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC).
• Donated goods(new and used), if they cannot be used within the hospice are sold at the shop or through charity sales for the poor
• Karunashraya can render services free of charge due to the continued generosity of donors.
Setellite Hospice
To share knowledge gained from Karunashraya, Bangalore Hospice Trust embarked on a mission to sign MOUs (Memorandum of Understanding) with seven satellite hospices for ongoing consultancy and Continuing Medical Education.
