About

The Benevolent Society, originally called the NSW Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and Benevolence, was founded by Edward Smith Hall in 1813. Edward Smith Hall was an influential figure in the colony and was also involved in forming Australia's first bank, the Bank of NSW, and a newspaper called The Monitor, one of the earliest examples of the free press in Australia.

In 1818,they were renamed The Benevolent Society of NSW and became a non-religious organisation, which they remain today. Lachlan Macquarie, the fifth Governor of NSW, who is remembered for his visionary leadership, unflinching integrity and care for those in need, became their first patron.

History

Their story is Australia’s story.

Imagine, an Australia without free legal aid, where child labour is still widespread, where there is no old age pension and no specialist maternity care. You’ve just imagined an Australia without The Benevolent Society.

Their story is the story of the nurses, the social workers and the carers who supported people in times of need. It’s the story of the thousands of people who donated time and money to help us help others and the advocates who fought for so many things they take for granted today.

Right from the start, they’ve been there for anyone who needs them, at the heart of change.

They’re Australia’s first charity. We’re a not-for-profit and non-religious organisation and they've helped people, families and communities achieve positive change since 1813.

Their vision

A just society where all Australians can live their best life.

Their purpose

To empower and educate for personal and societal change.

Helping families and kids thrive

From playgroups and parenting education to family counselling and household budgeting – they can help you build strong family relationships and be the best mum and dad you can be.

Looking after health and wellbeing

Wellbeing is a combination of physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. They provide a range of services to support you to enjoy life and deal with challenges.

Support to maintain your independence

They help people to live at home confidently and safely, and also provide support for carers to look after their own needs as well as those of the person they are caring for.

Learning and organisational development

For over 200 years they have worked in partnership with other organisations to improve the wellbeing of children, young people, families and older Australians, especially in disadvantaged communities. They also provide training, coaching, mentoring and consultancy services to practitioners and organisations. They believe that working with others will deliver a greater social impact for children, families and communities. In addition, each year more than 500 people across Australia work with their specialist leadership centre, Social Leadership Australia.

Social Benefit Bonds

The Benevolent Society is one of the first organisations to trial the Social Benefit Bonds in Australia. The bond funds Resilient Families, an intensive family support program designed to keep children with their families where safe, and avoid their entry to out-of-home care.
