Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research
Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research
About

The Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research is a climate research centre in Bergen, Norway. The centre has a special focus on Northern Europe and the Polar regions.

The Bjerknes Centre is a collaboration on climate research, between the University of Bergen, Uni Research, the Institute of Marine Research, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre.

The centre was part of Research Council of Norway's Centre of Excellence program from 2003 to 2013. Now it is funded directly by the government until 2021.

The Centre has expertise and interdisciplinarity: Meteorology, physical and chemical oceanography, mathematics, biogeochemistry, palaeoclimates, paleobotany, marine biology & modeling.

It also plays an important role in coordinating the national effort on the building and maintenance of the Norwegian Earth System Model and national research training of future generation of scientists in climate dynamics in Norway.

Projects
At the Bjerknes Centre for climate research (BCCR) they are researching climate change based on models and field observations at sea, on land, ice and the atmosphere. The center is involved in a total of approximately thirty projects. Most projects are financed by the Norwegian Research Council and the EU. Below are some selected projects.

Organic
ORGANIC applies for funding to study the physical and biogeochemical interactions in the climate system using state-of-the-art model system.

EPOCASA
Developing a dynamical climate prediction system.

SNACS
The research project SNACS takes a mulitdisciplinary approach to understand and predict the subpolar North Atlantic. Sedimentary archives will be used to dig into the past behavior of the subpolar North Atlantic, and we will look into the future by employing simulations from important model sets.

EVA
The Norwegian Earth system model (NorESM) is the main national facility for global climate studies.

In EVA, the NorESM will be further developed, extended, quality checked, and applied to key research questions in the field of climate science.

VENTILATE
A key knowledge here is the link between the physical processes and the oceanic carbon cycle.

To increase understanding of this link is the overall aim of VENTILATE.
