They believe in the genius and beauty of Black children and the unique role of Black Teachers in cultivating their gifts. The Black Teacher Collaborative (BTC) seeks to ensure that all Black children will have challenging, affirming, and innovative learning environments staffed by a critical mass of Black educators who are equipped to maximize their shared racial identity to push students’ academic growth and socio-emotional well-being.

Black Teacher Collaborative provides an opportunity for educators to build the mindsets, skills, experience, and knowledge needed to actualize a new model for Black teacher effectiveness and impact; ultimately, increasing teacher impact that will fuel the advancement of Black children, their families, and their communities.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

BTC’s current programmatic scope focuses on improving teacher impact in shared racial identity learning environments (SRILE). BTC is developing an innovative pedagogy, professional development curriculum and teacher fellowship that includes in-person and remote professional development sessions, on-going coaching, monthly blended learning modules and the completion of a capstone project at the end of the three-year fellowship. BTC launched the fellowship with 35 fellows at six pilot sites in the 2017-2018 school year in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, New Orleans, Louisiana and Atlanta, Georgia.

VISION

BTC’s vision is to create the conditions so that for every Black student, there will be challenging, affirming, and innovative learning environments staffed by a critical mass of high-quality Black educators equipped to maximize shared racial identity learning experiences over the course of their elementary and secondary education

PHILOSOPHY

Black Teacher Collaborative, a social entrepreneurship venture, provides an opportunity to engage in development of strategies and tools that build the mindsets, skills, and knowledge needed to actualize a new model for Black teacher impact and efficacy.

MISSION

BTC’s mission is to engage, develop, and support an intergenerational collective of Black educators who will ensure that Black children achieve at high levels academically while simultaneously preparing them with the intellectual, social, emotional, and cultural capital to actively participate in the ongoing advancement of their communities.
