Bob Paton was the CEO of Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA) from late 2004 to the end of 2017. MSA was one of Australia's 12 national Industry Skills Councils with national responsibility for the development of Australian Training Packages for the broader manufacturing industry. Previously Bob spent more than 8 years as National Executive Officer of the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Industry Training Advisory Body. These not-for-profit industry organisations had a focus on bringing the voice of industry in setting the occupational standards required by industry, particularly related to vocational education and training.
Bob has worked in roles in relation to the ongoing development and maintenance of national vocational qualifications and training products, gathering and providing labour market and industry intelligence and supporting the work of industry committees.
In addition, Bob has undertaken work with various international projects relating to the development and ongoing refinement of occupational standards in the Asia-Pacific region and India, as well as providing advice to governments in Asia and South America on industry workforce skills needs.
Prior to that Bob spent 20 years working for TAFE NSW as a teacher and department head, then in various administration roles associated with state-wide and national manufacturing and engineering curriculum development and implementation.
Bob originally served an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic, working on light and heavy vehicles, plant and equipment. Bob also spent 5 years working in Formula 1.
