California Harvesters, Inc. (CHI)
Officially launched in April 2018, CHI serves growers in California’s Central Valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. CHI is led by a team who has deep roots in agriculture and the farm labor community, along with a deep commitment to a different way of doing business. Currently, CHI employs over 1,200 workers, many of whom have never worked in our current crops previously—yet CHI’s employees produce costs that are competitive with established crews.
CHI’s team recognizes that there are problems in California’s farm labor system. Growers suffer from an industry-wide labor shortage and low retention of workers knowledgeable in their crops, while farmworkers are limited to existing low-wage jobs with little opportunity for upward mobility. CHI addresses these issues by providing higher wages, access to year-round work, valuable training, and leadership opportunities.
