CARE International: a global network against poverty
CARE is one of the world's largest international relief organizations. Over 9,000 employees worldwide, of whom 98% are directly from the project countries, work on the vision of a world without poverty. CARE has a consultative status with the United Nations and is politically and religiously independent. In 2015, 890 emergency aid and development projects were carried out in 95 countries, and more than 65 million people worldwide benefited from CARE projects.
CARE International now consists of 14 independent national member organizations. These include: Australia, Denmark, Germany, France, UK, India, Japan, Canada, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Peru, Thailand, USA.
CARE Austria
As one of the 14 independent national member organizations, CARE Austria is currently carrying out projects on its own, but also regularly supports the project work of CARE International (CI).
After the Second World War large parts of Austria were in ruins, people hungry. All the more important were the more than one million CARE packages distributed throughout the country. 40 years later, Austria was one of the richest countries in the world and was able to pass on help to the world. On 14 May 1986 CARE Austria was founded. CARE pursues a very clear goal in the global project work: to put sustainable steps against poverty. Accordingly, since 1986, CARE Austria has been active in 50 countries around the world.
What they do
For all projects CARE Austria is the top principle: help for self-help! CARE creates conditions under which the affected persons can help themselves. And ultimately makes itself superfluous.
Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid
In the event of disasters and in the short term, CARE is able to help quickly and efficiently through its branches all over the world. CARE supplies food, shelter and medication, but also provides psychological support. CARE takes the affected parties into the relief measures and gives them back as soon as possible a piece of independence. After major catastrophes, CARE usually stays in the affected region for years to help with reconstruction.
Sustainable development projects
One of the main assets of CARE is the sustainable safeguarding of food and water supplies. For example, CARE also carries out numerous agricultural and forestry projects aimed at increasing crop yields and maintaining soil fertility. CARE also ensures that socially and economically disadvantaged people have access to income, education, health care and political participation.
Advocacy: Together strong!
CARE runs a law firm to strategically influence national and international political decisions affecting the lives of the world's poorest people. CARE focuses on dialogue and constructive policy advice.
