The Center for Community Development and Education is a local Non Governmental organization based in Aceh, Indonesia. CCDE was established on 30 November 1993 with the initial purpose of helping women throughout their lives. Women (in general) in Aceh are still living in a marginal position, discriminated and vulnerable and often end up as victims. This unjust treatment has brought many women into poverty. They are poor in education and have less access to economic resources. Therefore, Center for Community Development and Education was established to offer alternative responses to the problems faced by women in Aceh.
Since 1993, CCDE started it works by organizing women in groups as a strategy to establish educational activities for women. CCDE trained women in various knowledge and skills needed by women, young women and girls to combat intellectual poverty of women. Since 1996, with a view to give more access and control to women over economic issues, CCDE has provided financial services through micro-credit programs for micro-entrepreneur women across the Aceh province. The mission of CCDE is to empower and strengthen women in Aceh, to take them out of poverty – both intellectually and financially.
In empowering and strengthening women, young women and girls in Aceh, CCDE has received the support of several funding organizations such as ASPPUK Jakarta, CRP Jakarta,YAPPIKA, WDP Germany, New Zealand Embassy, Canada Fund, NOVIB Netherland, Heifer Project International, CRS Jakarta. After tsunami when CCDE had to wake up from the ruin of tsunami, Oxfam International, Swiss Contact, Tifa Foundation, CRP Aceh, Walhi, FBCB, Netkraft Germany. For the 2006, CCDE supported by WDP Germany, Hivos and Shamdana Institute. In order to achieve the vision, missions and the goal, CCDE builds the networking with various independent stake holders, NGOs, local, National regional and International. Now CCDE has become the member of some NGO’s network such as Suloh, Aceh NGO Forum, Walhi, Kelompok Kerja Trasformasi Gender Aceh (KKTGA), ASPPUK Jakarta, Learning Community dan Heifer Project International (HPI/IA) Sumatera, Micro credit Summit Campaign, USA, Asia South Pacific Bureau for Adult Education (ASPBAE) , Forum Bersama capacity Building( FBCB ) Sumatra, Education- network for Justice Indonesia, Education for Rural People and Ecpat Indonesia.
What does CCDE do now?
For educational activities, CCDE is active doing community organizing, training, discussion and publishing books and bulletins for women and girls. For economic empowerment, CCDE provides its financial service through micro credit scheme. For helping children, CCDE is also developing children’s libraries in the rural community and scholarship program for orphans the survivors of tsunami disaster. The coveraged areas of CCDE works are in 7 districts in Aceh ( Banda Aceh, Great Aceh, Central Aceh, West Aceh, Nagan Raya, South West Aceh and South Aceh).
