The Marine Dynamics and Environment Centre was established under the Decision numbered 1265/TCCB dated 13 September 1999 of The President of Hanoi National University, Vietnam. In order to assemble a wide variety of lecturers, scientists and experts not only in the field of marine sciences but also in other dynamic fields, especially related to the field of environmental fluid dynamics within the National University, the Marine Dynamics and Environment Center has recently expanded its functions and changed its name into the Center for Environmental Fluid Dynamics (CEFD), under the Decision numbered 4034/ QD-TCCB dated 27 November 2009 of The President of Hanoi National University, Vietnam.
The Center for Environmental Fluid Dynamics (CEFD) has built up a strong reputation in Vietnam and in the region in the field of environmental fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics modeling, hydro-meteorology, coastal and river engineering, and water-related disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change through over many implemented projects. CEFD has been actively involved in projects funded by international and governmental institutions (WB, DANIDA, UNDP, MARD, GFDRR, MONRE, and Provincial People Committees).
CEFD provides an integrated service throughout the entire project life cycle, including feasibility studies, economic and financial analysis, environmental impact assessments, detailed and final design, master plans, assistance to procurement and commissioning, works supervision, capacity building. CEFD also has close relations with Faculty of Hydrology, Meteorology and Oceanography, VNU University of Science – one of the top education and research institutions in the field of hydrometeorology in Vietnam, therefore it can easily mobilize senior experts for the assignment as well as to discuss and consult the high-ranked scientist groups on the interested issues
CEFD is at the cutting edge in the use of innovative technologies to optimize management of water resources and infrastructure in river and coastal areas such as Mike software package (11, 21 FM), Delft3D, SMS POM, ROMS, ECOMSED etc., weather and climate forecast models such as WRF, RAMS, RegCM, etc. Along with the implementation of the consultant projects, with the completed equipment system, CEFD has conducted a number of technical surveys especially in coastal zone where there is lack of topography data which does not meet the requirement of high-resolution hydrodynamic models. The hydrodynamic parameters are also measured such as waves, tides, current, river discharge, suspended sediment concentration etc. for the use of boundary conditions, and the calibration, validation of the models.
CEFD has implemented consulting services through the academic staff, consultants and contributors which have been operated and managed by the Board of Directors and the support staffs on financial procedures and administration. Currently, CEFD has 61 persons including senior staffs, consultants and contributors as following:
