About

The birth of the University of Caracas, on December 22, 1721, represented one of the most important events of the entire Venezuelan colonial period, between the sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries, this being a very complex process, which It mainly meant that the Venezuelan colonial society had reached a degree of internal maturity that allowed it to aspire and obtain from King Felipe V the approval of the elevation of the Seminary College of Santa Rosa de Lima towards the status of the Royal University of Caracas (then also Pontifical by Bull of Innocent XIII of 1722), all driven by a society politically led by Mayorsand councilors of the city council of Caracas, the Rector and the professors of the former College of St. Rosa de Lima, the Bishop his ecclesiastical hierarchy, agricultural producers, merchants and Spanish officials, all in accordance with the changes and reforms with which the dynasty of the Bourbons intended to reorganize and modernize Spain and its overseas possessions. Changes that were expressed in our Venezuela with innovations represented both in the creation of the new University, and with the founding of the Royal Guipuzcoan Company of Caracas in 1728 and of the General Captaincy of Venezuela in 1777. All this being combined in the internal structural bases and external of the new Venezuelan nationality that were already prepared to assume the independent and republican path  from the crisis that began in 1810. Between 1725 and 1821 the University of Caracas, today UCV, graduated 2,756 of its students, Bachelors, Graduates, Teachers and Doctors, forming the professional group on whose basis the process of independence was built and Republican institutions From Andrés Bello and Francisco de Miranda, to Juan Germán Roscio and José María Vargas, among many heroes they passed through the classrooms of the Caracas University, illustrating the rest of society about the path and the institutions necessary to overcome the emancipation crisis.

The Central University of Venezuela's mission is to create, assimilate and disseminate knowledge through research and teaching; complete the integral training initiated in the previous educational cycles; and form the professional and technical teams that the nation needs for its development and progress.
