Established in Quebec since 1987, the Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement (Center for international cooperation in health and development), or CCISD, became a non-profit corporation in 1996, under the Canada Corporations Act. CCISD specializes in the design, planning, management, and monitoring and evaluation of international health projects and has implemented over 100 projects in 40 countries over the past 25 years. Current activities are mainly inHaiti and in sub-Saharan Africa. CCISD is also currently officially registered locally in 6 developing countries: Haiti, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Senegal.

CCISD’s actions, through coaching and technical assistance:

  • Support to health institutions governance and strengthening
  • Training of health personnel and capacity building
  • Support for increased community participation
  • Monitoring and evaluation and results based management
  • Capacity building for improved management of health information from epidemiological surveillance through information technologies

To carry out these actions, CCISD has developed expertise in the following areas of intervention:

Strengthening Primary Health Care, with a special focus on Maternal and Child health, and decentralized health systems for increased and equitable access to quality services.

Integrated epidemiological surveillance, with a focus on integrating information technologies and community based surveillance.

HIV/AIDS and STI Prevention, through multidisciplinary interventions and services tailored to most at risk populations.

Gender equity and a greater emphasis on gender aspects in all health projects.

Throughout its 25 years of experience, CCISD’s commitment to Maternal and child health has been a constant, and most present in activities to strengthen Primary Health Care, as women and children under 5 are often at least 80% of health facility users.  In most projects, maternal health is also promoted through:

  • capacity building of health professionals and health structure rehabilitation,
  • health education, awareness raising and behavior change communication,
  • supporting community participation and strengthening of community-based organizations to raise awareness
  • adequate surveillance and operational research to monitor progress and provide input on ways to improve and adjust projects.
