The only health center above the CM was the Cotonou Ambulance which had a hundred beds for all categories of patients. It will be necessary to await the eve of the independences to hope the birth in COTONOU of a hospital of 600 beds of which the first tranche of 350 beds was financed by the French Government (FIDES).
As of December 31, 2011, CNHU - HKM de Cotonou has 617 beds, including 29 observation and intensive care beds at the CUAU Emergency Reception Clinic, which succeeded SMAU (Medical Emergency Reception Service). The CUAU on the impulse of the Head of State was enlarged and fully equipped in 2011.
