CIREM, the Centre for European Initiatives and Research in the Mediterranean, is a not-for-profit private foundation that specialises in applied research and consultancy in the social sphere.
Created in 1989, CIREM is an independent centre working in the spirit of public service and guided by the highest standards of objectivity, professionalism, quality and innovation.
Based in the Mediterranean, CIREM has a commitment to improving policies and helping to solve problems. We are constantly updating our knowledge and the application of new working tools and methodologies that go beyond the frameworks of traditional analysis. In this way, CIREM is able to employ the methods and tools that are best suited to the requeriments of each particular project and client.
What We Do
Operating on the local, national and international levels, CIREM runs public and private projects from offices in Barcelona, Madrid, CIREM Rabat (Morocco) and CIREM Algiers (Algeria).
Over a thousand studies have been carried out thanks to the excellent work of a multidisciplinary team of more than 30 professionals, the involvement of a broad network of specialised collaborators and a long history of partnerships with other European research centres.

CIREM works with public administrations (at local, regional, national and European levels), employer, professional and trade-union organisations and institutions, as well as private enterprises and the third sector.
Throughout its existence, CIREM has worked regularly with the European Commission on research projects and has provided technical support – within the European Union as well as in other countries, particularly in the Mediterranean region and Eastern Europe.
CIREM takes part in helping less developed societies in the Mediterranean region to progress and to become economically integrated into the European context and has also been expanding its activity to other emerging societies in Central and Eastern Europe and in Latin America.
Core Research Areas
CIREM's projects -all within the framework of offering objective research in the spirit of public service- fall into three areas:
CIREM has opened up new fields of analysis in order to respond adequately to the emerging needs generated by the new post-Cold War reality. This new global configuration brings with it new converging social phenomena and problems relating to governance, societal flows, economic imbalances and the need for sustainable growth.
Within this geographical framework, we also analyse the status of the labour market, continuing vocational training, local development and social policies
