The ALPHA UJUVI Collective is a Congolese NGO which was initiated in 2001 by Sister DEODATA BUNZIGIYE to fight against illiteracy and illiteracy in the communities of Kivu. The ALPHA UJUVI Collective has adapted Paolo Freire's awareness-raising literacy approach to local realities and needs, such as in the Great Lakes region and particularly in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which are confronted with war and conflict difficulties.
Collective: because it contains within it several associations and groups accompanied with the aim of social promotion and development.
Alpha: alludes to literacy, learning.
Ujuvi: Kiswahili word meaning "curiosity" in the sense of creativity, research and therefore progress.
To date, thanks to the Alpha Ujuvi Collective, more than 80,000 illiterate people have had access to the knowledge of reading and writing. These actions have enabled all beneficiaries to become free agents and to become agents of conflict resolution and development in their communities.
To encourage the individual and collective empowerment of target groups and make them capable of making meaningful changes in their communities, the ALPHA UJUVI Collective proposes alternatives that can stimulate grassroots development.
