Communication for Development is a full-service communication-for-development firm that works with non-profits, development organisations, foundations, philanthropists and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) departments of ethical businesses.
Since humanitarian and development photographer Robin Wyatt founded the business in 2010, their team has grown to over 40 creative associates, based 'locally' across the Global South (click here for a map). Together with their writers, editors, graphic designers and other talented people, they tell the stories of the impact of their clients’ work for the consumption of present and potential donors through photography, video and words; they also feed into processes of change brought about by communicating visually with beneficiaries. The approach they take is a positive one: they believe in the power of compelling images and stories of hope, impact and change for the better to inspire those that give. They do not emphasise pain, misery and despair because the world has become saturated with such negative messaging, and nowadays it pushes all the wrong buttons.
They help their clients to leverage their good work in order to drive more attention and funding their way. They focus on the possibilities – what needs to be achieved and how it can be done. They are also able to make a strong contribution to education and awareness campaigns, as their work speaks directly to those who see it, engaging with them on a very human level. Their team members are highly localised, chosen in part because they understand the issues where they are based and are able to interpret and present them with sensitivity and clarity. Further, they work with, and relate to, their subjects as equals; this helps them to break down barriers of 'other-ness', lending intimacy to the images and stories they create.
Their clients to date have included The World Bank, The African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Union (EU), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Irish Aid, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Oxfam, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), Save the Children, HelpAge International, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Adam Smith International, Smile Train, Project Concern International (PCI), Concern Worldwide, Concern Universal, EveryChild, We Effect, CBM International, Hope foundation, World Renew, Coca-Cola CSR and the GSM Association’s ‘Mobile for Development’.
