From its inception in 2000, until 2008, the clinic operated under the name Mpala Community Trust (MCT). In August 2008, the MCT was transformed into the Community Health Africa Trust (CHAT).
In January 2011, CHAT amalgamated to include the activities of Nomadic Communities Trust (NCT), a community-based organisation (CBO) registered in Samburu, to enable communities to receive quality services with reduced administrative cost.
CHAT works in close partnership with the Kenyan Ministry of Health (MOH) and several other partners. The MOH provides quality control supervision along with commodities such as HIV test kits. In return, CHAT reports monthly to the MOH, assisting them in reaching more people, achieving their annual targets, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) .
Communities Health Africa Trust (CHAT), together with Rift Valley Tree Trust, inspired the formation of Community Health and Sustainable Environments (CHASE) four years ago, to fulfill the need for a UK based charity and fundraising partner. Community Health a Poverty Solution (CHAPS) was also formed in the USA about 6 years for the same purpose. As the founding partner, CHAT has always assisted partners wherever possible using our 15 years of experience in the field to introduce, help and inspire other organisations in Kenya to integrate population, health & environmental services.
CHAT has received an award in two categories from the Center for Health Market Innovations (CHMI), which is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and UKaid. In 2012 CHAT won the "Most Outstanding Health Market Innovation" award in the categories of "Enhancing Processes" as well as in "Mobile Health".
