Community of Democracies
About

The Community of Democracies is an intergovernmental organization that drives the global democratic agenda through common action. Since its establishment in 2000, the Community has brought the world’s democracies together to advance the democratic principles and promote the standards enshrined in the Warsaw Declaration Toward a Community of Democracies that was signed by 106 countries.

The Community seeks to support democratic transition and consolidation worldwide by assisting societies in the development and strengthening of democratic institutions and values, identifying, alerting and responding to threats to democracy so as to assist states to remain on the path to democracy, supporting and defending civil society in all countries, advancing broad-based participation in democratic governance, and giving a voice to those working peacefully for democracy in all countries.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Community is located in Warsaw. Following a vision of inclusion and mutual dialogue, learning and sharing of best practices, the Community of Democracies consists also of a Governing Council of 28 committed states, young democracies together with established ones, led by a rotating Presidency (currently held by the United States of America),. It includes also a special pillar for civil society, a parliamentary forum, a corporate forum, a youth dimension and an academic advisory board.
