CHASS is a computing facility within the Faculty of Arts & Science, University of Toronto. It was created on May 1, 1996 by merging two computing centres: the EPAS Computing Facility and the Centre for Computing in the Humanities, which - for the previous decade - have been separately serving social sciences and humanities disciplines at this University. The Facility's broad mandate is to promote computing in research and teaching within the humanities and social sciences departments.

CHASS also provides support to a number of institutes, centres, and other units within the University of Toronto, which - though not falling directly under CHASS' mandate - entered into separate agreements with the Facility. Those agreements vary in scope and duration, and are tailored to meet specific needs of their users.

On the national and international scenes, CHASS maintains and operates the highly successful CHASS Data Centre, a collection of social sciences and general interest databases (e.g., Canadian Census, CANSIM, IMF, World Bank Tables, etc.). Thanks to their agreements with Statistics Canada and other institutions, the CHASS Data Centre is used by over 25 subscribing universities from Canada and the United States.

CHASS' staff participates in a number of projects aimed at promoting instructional and research computing, and monitors developments in these areas around the world.
