About

About
The Italian General Confederation of Labor is an association representing workers and labor. It is the oldest Italian trade union organization and it is also the most representative one, with its over 5 million members, including workers, pensioners and young people entering the world of work; its history is deeply intertwined with the history of the country.

The CGIL plays an important role in protecting labor from unconditional and unlimited market action. It does so through the incessant work of building and reconstructing solidarity in work and among workers, through the daily practice of  concrete commitment to representation and bargaining. When it was born in 1906 - but the first Chambers of Labor date back to 1891 - it had two hundred thousand members. Since then it has maintained the double structure: vertical, made up of the category Federations, and horizontal, through the Chambers of Labor.

Currently there are 12 national categories while there are 115 Chambers of Labor throughout the national territory. The national CGIL is in Rome, in the historic headquarters of Corso d'Italia 25.

It stipulates, through trade organizations, employment contracts and at the same time carries out a protection action, aimed at defending, affirming and conquering individual and collective rights, ranging from welfare systems to workplace rights. CGIL is affiliated with the European Confederation of Trade Unions (Ces) and the International Confederation of Trade Unions (Ituc-Csi). The current secretary general is Maurizio Landini, elected on 24 January 2019.
