Culligan created his first water softener using a perforated bottom-bottomed coffee box filled with a natural silicate, zeolite, usually used to filter minerals. After a quick success, in 1936 he founded the firm Culligan in Northbrook, Illinois.
Today Culligan is represented in more than 86 countries on 5 continents and is the world leader in water treatment.
