Deaf Empowerment Society of Kenya (DESK)
Deaf Empowerment Society Of Kenya (DESK) is a registered Non-Governmental, Non-Partisan and not-for-profit Organization for and of Deaf persons in Kenya. DESK was established in late 2013 and became fully operational in 2015 with its Head-Office based in Embu County. DESK is the only Organization of its kind in Kenya and seeks to ensure equal opportunities in all walks of life for Deaf persons residing in Embu County and throughout in Kenya.
DESK was majorly established due to discrimination and prejudice against Deaf persons, in addition to the fact that there was no organisation or program specifically targeting the needs of those persons. DESK established itself with the goal of equally supporting Deaf persons in Embu County and throughout in Kenya to improve their standard of living. This support is in terms of human rights advocacy, education and training, political, social and economic empowerment.
To improve lives and life chances of Deaf and Hard of hearing persons in the Republic of Kenya.
Their Core Mission
DESK advances deaf persons' independence and empowerment in Kenya by increasing access to economic resources and entrepreneurship, education and training, leadership, human rights and decision-making as well as health, sexual and reproductive health rights.
Who they serve
DESK is serving Deaf persons of all ages, most of whom are young Deaf people from all backgrounds across the county. According to the 2010 Kenya Disability Survey, Kenya has a total population of 30,076,189. Of this, 800,000 are Deaf people.
