Democracy International Inc. (DI) provides technical assistance and analytical services and implements projects worldwide for democracy and governance (DG) programs for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other development partners. DI is based in the United States and is a SBA-registered small business.
Democracy International offers expertise and practical, field-based experience across the full range of democracy and governance programming. We provide DG analytical services as well as implement and advise on DG projects.
DG Analytical Services
Democracy International offers recognized technical expertise across a full range of democracy and governance analytical services, including assessments, evaluations, program designs, survey research, and applied DG research. We provide DG analytical services in all four DG subfields—elections and political processes, civil society, governance, and the rule of law—in emerging democracies, semiauthoritarian countries, postconflict societies, and failed and failing states. DI has assessed prospects for democracy, identified opportunities and priorities for democracy assistance, designed specific democracy and governance programs, and evaluated existing programs.
We offer expertise in research methods and the design, execution, and use of survey research. We have conducted surveys and provided training on quantitative research methods.
We work broadly on elections, including providing analytical services and technical assistance and implementing projects on election management and administration; international election monitoring; and domestic election monitoring, vote count verification, and other quantitative election monitoring techniques.
Political Party Assistance
DI and its principals have extensive, practical, field-based experience in the design and implementation of political party assistance programs. We have worked on building strong, policy-oriented political parties in emerging democracies around the world since the late 1980s. We have also worked with candidates and elected officials at the highest levels of American politics.
Democracy International has extensive, practical, field-based experience in design, implementation, and evaluation for a wide range of legislative strengthening programs across multiple country environments. We offer a range of services to strengthen legislatures and local government deliberative bodies.
Local Governance and Decentralization
Democracy International has experience with issues of local government and decentralization in a number of countries. The founding principals of Democracy International have been actively involved in the management and politics of subnational government, ranging from advising regional bodies in a collapsing Soviet Union to managing decentralization programs in Southeast Asia to holding local office in the United States.
Rule of Law
Democracy International has extensive experience evaluating and designing rule of law programs throughout the world. We offer a range of rule-of-law development services, including expertise in justice-sector institutions, legal frameworks, court and case management, law enforcement, legal training and professional development, and increasing legal access and advocacy. We have practical experience with the justice sector in developed and developing countries.
Civil Society, Advocacy and Civic Education
We have advised and provided assistance to civil society organizations throughout the world.
Fragile, Conflict, and Post-Conflict Environments
Democracy International has significant experience working in fragile, conflict, and postconflict environments. We can effectively and efficiently mobilize programs and technical assistance teams in multiple conflict and fragile environments. We understand the difficulties of working where the personal security of outsiders is open to question. We have dealt with a range of health, safety, and security matters, including emergency response procedures, specific security threats, medical emergencies, personal security details, coordination with host-country and international military and other security personnel, deployment of personnel to provincial reconstruction teams (PRTs), and the evacuation of staff members during a coup.
