Democracy Reporting International
About

Democracy Reporting International is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. Democracy Reporting International promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions world-wide. Democracy Reporting International helps support local ways of promoting the universal right of citizens to participate in the political life of their country, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)

Democracy Reporting International’s work is carried out by an international network of experienced associates, each of whom have worked in democratic governance and human rights for 10 to 20 years, often in senior positions.

Geographic Scope

Since it was founded in 2006, Democracy Reporting International has been widening its geographic scope with a continuing focus on countries whose democratic frameworks have often received little international attention. Democracy Reporting International strongly engages in the Middle East and Southern Mediterranean, while conducting an extensive democracy support programme in Pakistan. Beyond that, Democracy Reporting International engages on electoral issues in countries worldwide.

WHAT THEY DO

Democracy Reporting International operates on the conviction that democratic, participatory governance is a human right and governments should be accountable to their citizens. Democracy Reporting International promotes democratic governance around the world with a focus on institutional aspects of democracy, namely: Elections, Parliaments and Constitutions.

Through careful assessments based on detailed field research, Democracy Reporting International provides the public with specialist policy advice on improvements that can be made to enhance democratic governance. Democracy Reporting International advocates for such changes with domestic actors, the media and relevant international bodies and co-operates with national organisations, wherever possible.

ELECTIONS

Together with domestic partners Democracy Reporting International provides expert analysis throughout the electoral cycle. In particular the organisation has made a mark by providing independent, public assessments of electoral frameworks between elections.

PARLIAMENTS

Elections are meaningful where elected institutions play a genuine role in the political functioning of a country. Democracy Reporting International assesses parliaments’ perfomances and advocates for strong and effective legislatures.

CONSTITUTIONS

Constitutions provide the essential framework of a democratic state, determining the distribution of power, the role of democratic institutions and the inclusiveness of political systems. Democracy Reporting International assesses constitutional arrangements and advocates for democratic standards and principles.
