The Department of Urban Development and Building Construction is an organization that is constantly working to promote the system of managed settlement throughout the state of Nepal and to set appropriate standards for the construction of buildings as a basic need of the people. In order to manage the above tasks, this department has been performing the following tasks as specified by the Government of Nepal.

• To provide design, cost estimation and other consulting services for the construction, improvement and reconstruction of government buildings,
• To enhance the quality of design and construction work of government buildings, to prepare and implement necessary criteria and guidelines for maintaining the quality of consultants involved in the design and construction of government buildings,
• To prepare building construction guidelines and norms,
• To prepare the building for construction,
• Coordinating for detailed design and preparation of Sanitary Planning of Buildings, Air Conditioning System, Thermal Insulation, Acoustic Design Lift, Escalator Systems,
• To collect up-to-date data of all government buildings and prepare long term policy on maintenance of government buildings on the basis of it and act accordingly.
• To propagate the use of government and non-government sector by selecting appropriate technology considering the experience of other countries related to building construction.
• To work on rate analysis and preparation of construction guidelines,
• In order to solve the problems arising in the way of systematic development of urban settlements and to solve the growing environmental problems, necessary strategies and detailed plans have been formulated and gradually implemented in coordination and partnership with the local bodies.
• Gradually implementing the plan as per the criteria related to the Urban Development Act, Urban Development Plan,
• Update and implement building codes gradually,
• To assist local bodies to enhance their technical capacity to enable them to conduct their own plans and programs,
• To establish coordination and partnership among local bodies in the formulation and implementation of development plans affecting those bodies,
• Develop and implement short-term and long-term plans for urban development and building construction,
• To carry out works related to protection of urban environment.
• To synthesize the structural design of the joint housing building to be constructed under the joint housing policy.
• To do other works as prescribed by the Government of Nepal from time to time.
