Down To Earth is a product of commitment to make changes in the way they manage environment, protect health and secure livelihoods and economic security for all. They believe strongly that they can and must do things differently. The aim is to bring you news, perspectives and knowledge to prepare you to change the world. They believe information is a powerful driver for the new tomorrow.
Down To Earth was started by environmentalist Anil Agarwal, who had a dream and commitment to make us aware of the challenges and believed that they could be the change in the world. It started in 1992 as a print magazine – the first cover was the ecological globalisation in the inter-connected world. Since thent hey have come a long way (or not) as the world is more aware of the dangers of climate change and yet even less prepared to deal with challenges of local and global environmental management.
Down To Earth is available in print – every fortnight they bring you detailed analysis and perspectives on the world around us. You can also get this print edition in digital form – download it on your IPAD or get a pdf copy. Like all publishers all over the world they are struggling to get the balance between the website and print edition. But they believe they need both – and they hope you will agree. They ensure that the print/digital subscribers get exclusive content – including the monthly children’s magazine Gobar Times.
The team at Down To Earth is skilled and passionate. It knows you crave for new ideas; you want to know what is changing in the world that is for the good. It also knows that they all have a duty to hope. They look at ways people are working in forests, farms and factories to make a difference. They try and tease out how these small experiments in the world’s development laboratory can be scaled up. In their experience scaling up invariably requires a change in some policy, rule or regulation. The objective is to provide this understanding for impact.
Down to Earth knows they make a difference. They know this because the articles are used to push policy; used to challenge status quo; used to spread the word about what is possible. They know you believe in independence. They have your trust. The information has purpose. It is credible.
Down to Earth cannot sustain work without your help. One, they need your involvement in taking ideas further. They do not have the marketing muscle to get into each house; they are also limited by language. But they know if you can be a messenger, multiplier and a friend, you can spread the word, use the information; take the word to action; bring us back the news about this impact. Help us to do what seems so impossible: turn the tide so that the present and future is secure.
