OUR ACTIVITIES

 

Pihl is a modern engineering and contracting company. We can offer a wide spectrum of professional knowledge and cover most of the competences within the civil engineering and construction industry.

One of our strengths is the respect we have for traditional Danish building techniques combined with the ability to develop new methods and handle building management in which case we gladly assume responsibility for the entire building process – from the idea is born and until the project has been completed.

Pihl is working in Denmark and in most of the world; the projects are ranging from the Copenhagen Opera House, the Öresund Tunnel, motorways and harbours in the Caribbean and Africa to wastewater plants in Asia and hydro power plants in Iceland and Panama.

We have in-house planning resources as well as a considerable own production within concrete, masonry, carpentry and painting works.

 

 

Infrastructure

Infrastructure projects is one of Pihl’s core business areas, and over the years, we have built a number of the roads, bridges, railways, airports and car parks you use or pass by in Denmark and abroad.

For each separate project, we put together a team of dedicated employees that have the relevant expertise and co-operation skills demanded in the project.

 

 

Hydraulic constructions

Pihl carries out harbour works and coastal protection in Denmark as well as abroad.

Many of the projects that Pihl takes on challenge our ability to develop and manage new methods; e.g. in connection with complex harbour works, protection of exposed coastlines or construction of wind turbine foundations.

 

 

Water and environment

The need for water supply plants and environmental technologies is increasing considerably in most of the world. Climate changes, pollution and high population density in many parts of the world will undoubtedly increase this need further in the years to come.

Pihl plans and constructs systems for sewerage water and surface water. In each project we have a close cooperation with the technicians of the various municipalities and counties, external consultants and other players on optimization of the project.

We also carry out well-boring and install drinking water systems and wastewater treatment plants. Many of these types of projects are in Africa and Asia.

 

 

Energy

Increased global demand for sustainable energy has intensified the need for alternative energy sources like water and wind power and biogas plants but also optimization of existing combined heat and power stations.

Pihl has more than 40 years’ experience in the construction of combined heat and power stations and hydro power plants from projects in Denmark, Greenland, Iceland and latest also in Panama where Pihl, in the capacity as leading partner in a Danish joint venture, is constructing a combined heat and power station to produce energy to thousands of people.

Pihl also carries out offshore projects. Lately we have been participating in the foundation works for 49 giant wind turbines at Lillgrund in the Swedish part of Oresund.

 

 

Building

Irrespective of the scope of the construction project, the client – public or private – will appreciate that his project progresses as efficiently as possible right from the initial concept until the date of handing over.

Pihl gives high priority to a close cooperation with the client, architect and consulting engineer and focus on tight and competent project management whether we are building schools, sports centres, offices, shopping centres or industrial plants.

We work within optimization of energy and comfort in existing buildings as well as in new sustainable building projects. Examples are Ramboll's new head office and Havneholmen Tower in Copenhagen, Navitas Park in Aarhus and the kindergarden Sanseslottet in Kolding.

 

Cultural buildings

By carrying out such projects as the Opera House and the Royal Danish Theatre's Playhouse,  both situated in Copenhagen, Pihl has proven its strength within project management and execution of large and complex cultural buildings - on schedule and to budget.

Rehabilitation and urban renewal

Pihl gladly accepts large rehabilitation and urban renewal projects and has e.g. carried out rehabilitation works on Copenhagen Central Station and larger blocks of flats.

 

 

Rehabilitation

Pihl takes on small as well as large renovation jobs as well as urban renewal works for various housing associations, public institutions and private companies.

The tasks include such varied projects as Copenhagen Central Station, hospitals and schools, e.g. The school of Sundbyøster in Copenhagen, blocks of flats, e.g. the complex of Askerød in Greve, Greater Copenhagen, but also such special tasks as renovation of buildings listed for preservation or other buildings worth preserving, e.g. Rigensgade Kaserne in Copenhagen and seamarks at the Trekroner Coast Fort in Copenhagen Harbour.

Several of the tasks are carried out by Pihl’s own production department.

 

 

Production Department

Pihl has its own Production Department. The department is fully integrated in Pihl’s organisation and it solves many internal tasks and participates in co-operations with other companies, just as we carry out independent tasks.

 

Competences

Pihl’s Production Department has over the years participated in a lot of large-scale as well as smaller projects and has extensive expertise within the masonry, carpentry/joinery and painting trades, incl. operation and maintenance of buildings and natural stone works, steel works and ironwork.

As part of a large and modern contracting company, Pihl’s Production Department disposes of a large variety of competences in Pihl’s other departments and can solve very complex tasks with high requirements regarding the method of execution and the finish of the performed work.

 

 

Cooperation

Pihl carries out many projects in cooperation with other contracting companies. Much of our portfolio is carried out as management contractor and turnkey contractor, general contractor, individual trade contractor or in partnerships.

Pihl also has several years’ experience with public-private partnerships outside Denmark and was in 2007 chosen as a PPP enterprise in the first PPP project of the Danish state: Rigsarkivet (Denmark’s national archives in Copenhagen).

We have good experience with Design-Build projects and we actively work in favour of the Build-Operate-Transfer concept via the enterprise Pihl Projekt Investering A/S.

Pihl is, in Denmark as well as abroad, represented in permanent consortiums. Pihl also has subsidiaries in several countries.
