In 1925, Edward Warriner Hazen established a foundation to “promote the public welfare, either by supporting existing agencies or through independent activities to be exclusively religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational in character.” From its inception, the Foundation has concentrated primarily on the education and development of young people “…those who in the natural course of events will be the leaders of tomorrow,” as expressed by Edward Hazen. Despite drastic changes in the social, political and economic landscape, this legacy lives on through the foundation’s longstanding support of the education and development ofyoung people. Today young people, particularly youth experiencing oppression based on race and class, continue to be the primary focus of the Foundation.
