The authority was upgraded from section office to embassy in December 2010. Since then, Sweden's relations with Albania have been developed and diversified, and in 2016 Johan Ndisi was named Sweden's first ambassador based in Albania.
The embassy's main focus is political / economic reporting and dialogue and development cooperation with Albania. In particular, the embassy's work is focused on supporting Albania's EU integration. Swedish development cooperation amounts to approximately SEK 100 million in 2018 and focuses on a number of priority areas such as economic development, democracy, the rule of law and human rights, and the environment and climate. Sweden works consistently to strengthen women's rights, resources and representation.
In addition, the embassy is working to promote trade relations and the cultural exchange between Sweden and Albania. The embassy is located in Tirana's student district, which enables dialogue with young people.
