CELEC EP, being a Public Company and due to its scope of action, is defined as a strategic public service.

Its purpose is the provision of electrical service and this must respond to the principles of obligation, generality, uniformity, responsibility, universality, accessibility, regularity, continuity and quality.

The main activities of the Strategic Public Company Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador CELEC EP are the following:

1. The generation, transmission, distribution, commercialization, import and export of electrical energy; for which it is empowered to carry out all related activities, which among others include:

• a.  The planning, design, installation, operation and maintenance of systems not incorporated into the National Interconnected System, in areas that cannot be accessed or it is not convenient to do so through conventional networks.
• b.  Buy, sell, exchange and commercialize energy with distribution companies, other generation companies, large consumers, exporters and importers.
• c.  Buy, sell and commercialize energy with end users in the areas that, according to the Law that regulates the electricity sector, are assigned to carry out the activity of distribution and commercialization of electrical energy.
• d.  Represent natural or legal persons, manufacturers, producers, distributors, brands, utility model patents, equipment and machinery in the same lines or activities, related or similar to those provided for in its corporate purpose and,
• e. Promote, invest and create affiliate companies, subsidiaries, consortiums, strategic alliances and new ventures to achieve its purpose.

2. Associate with natural or legal persons, national or foreign, public, mixed or private, to carry out projects related to its corporate purpose in general.

3. Participate in international associations, institutes or groups dedicated to scientific and technological development and research in the field of construction, design and operation of electrical engineering works.

4. or Scientific or technological research and development of processes and systems and commercialize them.
