Energy Corporation of Kosovo sh.a. (KEK sh.a.) is the main energy company in the Republic of Kosovo. It is vertically integrated and was corporatized at the end of 2005. The Corporation's assets are fully owned by the Government of the Republic of Kosovo. In different periods of time KEK sh.a. underwent numerous changes. For a long time, the energy system of Kosovo has been an integral part of the energy system of the former Yugoslavia. During that period, the production of electricity in Kosovo has been concentrated in the production of electricity from coal (thermo) and in a very small amount from water (hydro). During this time, the electricity supply was not made only by the thermal power plants of Kosovo, but also from other sources that produced electricity and that were distributed throughout the territory of the former Yugoslavia. After 1999, KEK went through several stages of restructuring and organizational and operational changes, to recently mark the process of complete separation and then privatization of the electricity distribution and supply business, which ended in 2013 and now this business is under private ownership, with full legal responsibility for the distribution and supply of electricity to consumers.
Today, the primary function of the Corporation is coal production and electricity generation. To fulfill these two functions, KEK is organized in two essential Divisions, the Mining Division and the Generation Division. The corporation operates surface mining of lignite, namely the Southwest Sibovc Mine, two thermal power plants, TC "Kosova A" and TC "Kosova B". The Corporation's functions are regulated through the policies of the Energy Regulatory Office of the Republic of Kosovo. The corporation employs about 4,700 employees in various fields of operation.
