History

They are part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) who promote the United Kingdom’s interests overseas, supporting citizens and businesses around the globe. The FCO are responsible for:

  • - Safeguarding the UK’s national security by countering terrorism and weapons proliferation, and working to reduce conflict
  • - Building the UK’s prosperity by increasing exports and investment, opening markets, ensuring access to resources, and promoting sustainable global growth
  • - Supporting British nationals around the world through modern and efficient consular services.

Originally they were an internal department within the FCO providing them with support services in order to achieve their objectives. In keeping with the government’s drive to increase the value added by public service to the taxpayer, they became an Executive Agency on 1 April 2006. They have used this commercial status to expand their customer base and become more accountable, streamlined and efficient. They met their goal to become a Trading Fund by 1 April 2008 and are extremely proud to have provided secure services to their customers for over 60 years.
