The Federal University of Pará (Portuguese: Universidade Federal do Pará; UFPA) is one of the three public universities maintained by the Brazilian federal government in the state of Pará. It was ranked as the 15th largest Brazilian university in a 2011 academic ranking by the number of enrollments. The university has over 40,000 students enrolled in its courses, which are offered across its many campuses in the cities of Belém, Abaetetuba, Altamira, Bragança, Castanhal, Cametá, Capanema, Breves, Tucuruí and Soure. Among UFPA research teams, there are many nationally recognized groups, particularly in the fields of parasitology, tropical diseases and, Geosciences.

History
The University of Pará was created by Law nº 3,191, of July 2, 1957, sanctioned by President Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, after five years of legislative process. He has congregated the seven federal, state and private colleges in Belém: Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Engineering, Dentistry, Philosophy, Sciences and Letters and Economic, Accounting and Actuarial Sciences.
More than 18 months after its creation, the University of Pará was solemnly installed in a session presided over by President Kubitschek at the Teatro da Paz on January 31, 1959. Its installation was a symbolic act, since Decree No. 42,427 On October 12, 1957, approved the first Statute of the University which defined the orientation of the Institution's educational policy, and since November 28 of that year the first rector, Mário Braga Henriques (november 1957 to ten 1960).
On December 19, 1960, José Rodrigues da Silveira Netto, who occupied the Rectory for eight and a half years (December 1960 to July 1969), took office.
The first statutory reform of the University took place in September 1963, when the new Statute was published in the Official Gazette of the Union.
Two months after the statutory reform, the University was restructured by Law No. 4.283, of November 18, 1963. During this period, new courses and new basic activities were implemented, with the objective of promoting regional development and also Activities of the Institution.
A new restructuring of the University was attempted in 1968 with a plan submitted to the Federal Council of Education. From the end of 1968 to the beginning of 1969, a series of legal diplomas, notably Laws 5,539 and 5,540 / 68, established new criteria for the functioning of Universities.
From July 1969 to June 1973, the Rector was Aloysio da Costa Chaves, a period in which Decree No. 65,880, dated December 16, 1969, approved the new restructuring plan of the Federal University of Pará. One of the essential elements of this plan was The creation of the Centers, with the extinction of the existing Faculties, and the definition of the functions of the Departments.
On September 2, 1970, the Federal Council of Education approved the General Regulations of the Federal University of Pará, through Ordinance No. 307/70. A regimental revision was made in 1976/1977, in order to comply with legal provisions, which generated a new Bylaw, which was approved by the Federal Council of Education through Opinion no. 1,854 / 77 and published in the Official Gazette on July 18, 1978.
Clóvis Cunha da Gama Malcher took office in July 1973 (July 1973 to June 1977), followed by Aracy Amazonas Barretto (July 1977 to June 1981) and Daniel Queima Coelho de Souza (July 1981 to June 1985) . In 1985, the Rector's Rules of Procedure were reformulated, after approval of Resolution 549, of the University Council, on December 9, 1985, and became effective until the present date.
José Seixas Lourenço held the Rectory from July 1985 to June 1989, Nilson Pinto de Oliveira, from July 1989 to June 1993, Marcos Ximenes Ponte, from July 1993 to June 1997, and Cristovam Wanderley Picanço Diniz, From July 1997 to June 2001. In the quadrenniums of 2001/2005 and 2005/2009, the rector was prof. Dr. Alex Bolonha Fiúza de Mello. In the periods of 2009 to 2013 and 2013 to 2016 was rector prof. Carlos Edilson de Almeida Maneschy. His second term was interrupted on 05/17/2016 when he resigned to run for mayor of the municipality of Belem. In the short period from 05/17/2016 to 05/10/2016 Vice-Rector Horacio Schneider held the post of Rector of UFPA.
Currently, the Federal University of Pará is a federal institution of higher education, organized as an autarchy, linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), through the Department of Higher Education (SESu). The fundamental principle of UFPA is the integration of teaching, research and extension functions. The current Rector is Prof. Dr. Emmanuel Zagury Tourinho, elected for the quadrennium 2016-2020.
