FMI was founded in response to the collapse of authoritarian governments in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. FMI initially served only private sector clients, including major banks and exchanges. Over time, FMI commenced assisting USAID, the World Bank, EBRD, and other multilaterals, focusing at first on the development of capital markets, securities and commodity exchanges, and non-bank financial institutions.
