FECT started work as a small project sponsored by the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (hosted at Columbia University and the University of California-San Diego) and the Mahaweli Authority in 2000. Thereafter realizing a need to promote research in environmental and climate science and technology and its societal and environmental applications, they started the Foundation for Environment, Climate, and Technology under a service-oriented non-profit charter.
FECT builds on the work of the officers in Sri Lanka and internationally. Their work is oriented towards developing useable scientific and technological information that can be applied by users in diverse sectors.
They work with partners locally and in the Maldives, Comoros, and Zanzibar coordinated by the Federation for Environment, Climate and Technology. They have undertaken about 30 projects with organizations in Government institutions, Research Institutes, Universities, Civil Society, Local Government, and the Private Sector.
