The Casa del Niño Children's Hospital is a non-profit foundation that for 79 years has worked for the well-being of children and adolescents on the Colombian Caribbean coast, promoting access to medium and high complexity health services, comprehensive and of quality, among which are the Cardiovascular Surgery Programs, Hemophilia Program and the Pediatric Hemato-oncology Program . Being the only pediatric hospital in the Colombian Caribbean region, they have 28 pediatric specialties and subspecialties.
They also have an intensive care unit, the Fundación UCI Doña Pilar , which was born in 2007 thanks to a group of pediatricians from Cartagena, concerned about the care of children suffering from a critical illness.
For its part, they have a commitment to the academy through the Center for Research and Teaching - CID-, which is a fundamental part of the training stage of health professionals, pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. Through their research groups: Niños Heroicos and Pediátrica Infectología that are attached to the University of Cartagena through the department of pediatrics, they have become active producers of scientific articles that have been published in national and international journals.
Being the only exclusively pediatric care hospital in the Caribbean region gives them a great responsibility, which is why their commitment goes beyond specialized medical care, committing themselves to comprehensive care for the patient and their family, generating a high impact in them beneficiary population. Such is their commitment that they have the Ronald McDonald House , a place of passage for patients and their families, coming from outside Cartagena, to stay free while they receive specialized medical care.
For more than 79 years, the Casa del Niño has managed to positively impact the children of Cartagena, the Caribbean region and Venezuela after the great migration of recent years. This is demonstrated by them in-hospital mortality rate, which has been lower when compared to the mortality rate of the Cartagena District, which reflects the quality and effectiveness in the management of pediatric pathologies that are treated in their institution, placing it as a benchmark for the city and the Caribbean Coast. This is how Cartagena Como Vamos recognized them as one of the institutions that promoted the reduction of deaths from ARI acute respiratory infection in the city during 2017.
